So the eagerly anticipated Apple Watch is here… well our’s isn’t it is still in the back log of pre-orders so it is slowing up our progress to make some really great accessories to go with it, we just can’t wait to announce them.
We are really keen to hear from the lucky people and find out what they think about the Watch. Personally i’m also really interested to know which one you went for as it is a hot topic in the office here at TORRO HQ. The big debate is on the Watch Edition, is it really worth the thousands of pounds it costs, some say being an early adopter and keeping the Watch in nice condition is an investment which can be sold in years to come as piece of Apple heritage for the most esteemed collector. Others say, if you can afford to throw that type of money at an Apple Watch then you clearly have that type of money so why not!!!
Cook and Co at Cupertino have really priced this piece of wrist jewellery in direct parallel pricing to the brands who will be watching this very, very carefully; Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitiling, Omega and co. I’m sure they will all be saying “it’s not gonna impact on our market, it’s tech, we’re jewellery” well i’m sure that is said with fingers crossed under the desk. What is your view?!! The Apple Watch edition certainly isn’t being marketed as ‘just tech’ look at all the superlatives coming from Sir Jony Ive, this is Art not just jewellery. This is the big question, would someone who had decided they were going to buy a £10k Rolex then decide.. stuff it, i’m going Apple.. I say no, and here’s why. If you were going to treat yourself on that piece of Swiss mastery on your wrist then you are investing in a status symbol, fashion accessory, piece of jewellery and highly dependable time piece that will last up to.. well.. for ever, it won’t age, wont need software updates that Rolex only provide to newer watches, it won’t become defunct to a newer type of mechanics to move the hands and keep the time ‘it won't be able to open your garage door but that’s besides the point’ I digress, the classic Rolex will look great on your wrist for years and years and then perhaps to the child you leave it to, £10k well spent. The Apple Watch at the same price… well yes you will be the coolest dude in town.. for a year until they bring out a new one with stand alone features like GPS perhaps, then another the year after? and then your’s is totally obsolete as the processor cannot support the latest Watch Apps, the newer Watch Edition then becomes slimmer, your’s clearly looks dated, the next one comes with a more curved glass.. and so on and so on. In 5 years your Gold Apple Watch Edition is a heavy outdated iPad 1 which has the functionality to even frustrate a 6 year old. Who knows Apple may allow the user to keep the Gold casing and replace the circuit board, I doubt it though.
In Summary if you have saved your whole life for that special piece of wrist wear I very much doubt you will go for the Watch Edition so the Swiss matchmakers can sleep easily ‘for now’ I very much guess those who you see sporting the Edition will have enough Swiss watches in their Jewellery boxes to buy a small flat and thus the luxury of an Apple Watch Edition is a nice thing to add. Who knows, you’re numbers might come up tomorrow night ;-)
